Fortune's Weave
Early Money & Why I Am Saving the Pearls
The early Cai economy is tight before the first Heroic Games qualifier. My rule is to let quests and trades pay for progress instead of liquidating materials that later quests want.

My short answer
Finish the available quests, keep Insect Pearls and Large Insect Pearls for their quest chain, use Vandahl Trading when spare materials can replace gold, and avoid treating every shop upgrade as mandatory.
- Where I am
- Free Time 2 before the 3/7 Gaia Brigade qualifier. I found the missing granddaughter and have completed every Kindness Quest and Subquest currently available to me. My Renown level is 3.
- Next
- Before advancing into the 3/7 qualifier, complete Castor's Terrain Tips mentorship if it is still open, check whether I have already seen the optional Bertrand jail scene, then use any remaining turns intentionally.
I hit the first real money squeeze before the 3/7 Gaia Brigade qualifier, not after it. That correction matters because this site is supposed to remember my actual save rather than a version of it I accidentally skipped ahead to.
The useful conclusion did not change:
being broke is not evidence that an item is meant to be sold.
The clearest example is the Insect Pearl chain. Regular Insect Pearls and Large Insect Pearls are requested directly by later Subquests, and the quest payouts are much better than treating those items as ordinary vendor loot.
For the rest of the early economy, I use three rules.
Quests are the paycheck. I am already a thorough explorer, so Kindness Quests and Subquests turn the way I naturally play into gold and Renown without inventing a grind.
Trading can substitute for spending. Vandahl Trading matters more when cash is scarce. If something useful can be obtained with materials I truly have to spare, that keeps gold available for things that cannot be bartered for.
Not every upgrade is urgent. A slightly better item for a character who is already doing their job is not automatically worth draining the wallet.
The next route-specific pressure valve is Farming, which arrives later on Cai's path. Until then, the goal is simply to stop converting future quest value into today's emergency cash.

The Fabled Insect Pearl quest chain: 3 regular Insect Pearls for 5000G, then 2 Large Insect Pearls for 8000G, followed later by a quest asking for 8 Insect Pearls of any type. This is why pearls are quest inventory before they are sellables.

Understand every system; deliberately optimize only the ones that make the game less repetitive. Finish the game before trying to perfect it, and treat replay as permission to experiment rather than a punishment for missing something.
