Cai Part I: How My Army Actually Developed

My completed Cai Part I run: the restarts, tournament victories, increasingly specialized team, final Bertrand preparation, and what I learned along the way.

5 min readSpoilers: mechanics

I finished Cai's Part I after spending far more time learning how I like to build a Fire Emblem army than just following the next objective marker. This is my playthrough, not a claim that every player should follow the same route. For the reusable stats, checkpoint tables, and still-open questions, see Cai Part I field notes.

How the run changed

At first I was figuring out classes, quests, travel, recruitment, and how to spend free-time turns without wasting them. Early equipment was a temptation to train whatever the game handed me. Eventually I gave characters distinct jobs instead: Cai as a mobile spear powerhouse; Alexandra as a fast flier; Peter on bows; Tialla and Sofia on magic and healing; Guzran on fast swords; Noctula on close-range physical combat; Jasmine protecting everyone behind the front.

I really did restart Chapter 10 to recruit additional characters and prepare properly. It was not just an option I was considering. After that I completed the semifinal, Chapter 11, and reached Chapter 12 on October 30. I later restarted Chapter 12 as well, finished its quests, and went into the Bertrand finale with the main group at level 35 or higher.

The earlier restart of Chapter 8 for the first tournament matters too: I had tested roughly 40 turns of inn Auto-Leveling, disliked the payoff, reloaded, and trained through actual combat instead. Beating Leda and the subsequent beast was the moment the party started feeling like the powerful, coordinated team I wanted.

The characters who defined it

Cai finished as my level-approximately-42 spear leader, an Armored Ornius Rider using a Meganius. The new mount gave me more movement instead of Paired Bulk; his reported Attack Speed was around 34. He reached S+ Spears and used Star Spear +1 and Da Mina Spear +1. I did not deliberately grind Cai ahead of everyone: ordinary necessary fights kept feeding him experience, while I often tried to direct discretionary kills toward Alexandra.

Alexandra reached S+ Spears too. She was around level 38–39 late in Chapter 12, flying with a Javelin and Da Mina Spear +1. I like her exceptional movement and want her faster and stronger without sacrificing flying mobility. Bucephalus and a captured Falicorn are part of the mount story, although the exact final bond and mount status still need a screenshot.

Tialla became an Ovate, not merely a backup healer. Her offensive spells, Heal/Recover/Physic, and Lend Strength+, Lend Defense+, and Lend Magic made her exceptionally flexible. Sofia, a Bishop, stayed the main healer. The two were not competing for the same job.

Peter became a Sniper with Da Mina Bow +1; I repaired Tempest Bow +1 and kept it available even when he was holding another bow. Guzran became a fast Shido with Cleansing Blade +1 and at least S Swords. His low magical resilience was a matchup warning, not a reason to abandon the build.

Noctula became one of my favorites and reached roughly level 37–38; she used Qiankun Circles and Da Mina Gauntlets +1. I preferred investing in her rather than trying to catch Ultand up. A possible Warrior promotion remained a decision, not an action I have confirmed.

Jasmine is the clearest example of my taste in builds. I wanted an armored rear-guard who kills enemies for attacking her, not merely a wall. At the October 29 screenshot checkpoint she had 0 Attack Speed. A later new ability brought her to 7 Attack Speed at level 35; she also acquired Da Mina Axe +1. I considered Dreadnought, but do not have a final confirmed class screenshot. Do not silently turn that consideration into a promotion.

Yang Jie surprised me by surviving and counterattacking effectively as a Priest, enough that I started investigating a mounted healer/Troubadour path. Loretta joined the late lineup at roughly level 37 as a Dark Pegasus with a Ji and Levin Sword. Whether they displaced anyone in the actual Bertrand deployment has not been recorded.

The real end-of-run changes

My late-game team was no longer the earlier October 29 snapshot. Cai was about 42, Alexandra 38–39, Tialla 39, Peter 36–37, Guzran 36–37, Noctula 37–38, Sofia 35–36, Jasmine 35, and Loretta about 37. Those are verbal estimates, not exact post-final-battle stats. I completed all the quests I was tracking before Bertrand and repaired valuable gear. I also completed the White-Maned Demon's Request earlier; do not send me back for it.

I ended Cai's Part I with Aurora, Smyrnos and Kalla Blessings at level 3; Mars at level 1. The remarkable part: I did not use Blessings in combat during Cai's Part I. I won by building a team I enjoyed using, not by optimizing Divine Sand.

The final Bertrand battle: overwhelming victory was the point

Looking back after starting Leda's route, I described Cai's final battle as largely uneventful because my preparation had worked. Nearly all ordinary enemies went down in one hit. Goliath and Bertrand were the notable exceptions. The core fighters were generally in the high 30s to low 40s. I think I lost one unit, possibly Sofia, but I'm not sure of either the count or the character's identity; do not mark Sofia as a confirmed casualty.

My reaction is important: a close fight isn't what makes a battle exciting to me. If I barely scrape through an encounter, I wonder which systems or preparation opportunities I failed to use. When I obliterate the enemy, I get the reward for learning the mechanics, choosing and training the right characters, acquiring good gear and doing more preparation than I think the normal/casual difficulty expects of most players. The final encounter validates all those earlier decisions. A decisive victory is a success, not an anticlimax.

This is also why I am unlikely to replay the whole game after seeing all the story content. I would rather develop each team thoroughly once, including its manual War Arc, and remain open to DLC afterward.

What I still need to fill in

  • Exact last battle deployment, whether Jasmine promoted, and the post-Bertrand stat screen. Latest verbal account: ordinary enemies mostly one-shot; approximately one possible casualty, maybe Sofia, unconfirmed.
  • Final screenshots: exact levels, equipment, skills, mounts, class mastery and Attack Speed.
  • Which particular recruits came from the Chapter 10 restart; whether Goliath was recruited (not confirmed).
  • The name of Jasmine's new Attack Speed ability.
  • Exact dates/turn counters for Chapters 10–12 beyond the established Chapter 12 arrival date.

I have now begun Leda's Part I, starting a new story after Cai. My actual Leda playthrough tracks what I did, while the Leda preparation guide remains the separate build and recruitment plan. I still intend to play Dietrich and Theodora before returning to Cai's War Arc.

The journal keeps the session. These carry the conclusion.
